not your father’s faith

I know — we sing “faith of our fathers,” because we know that the gift passed on to us by faithful witnesses connects directly to the faith of Paul and the life of Jesus. But in reality many of us are also grateful that the faith we have is different from the faith of our living fathers. Often our fathers faith was distorted by the experience of legalism and religion. We hope that we ourselves and our children will walk closer to the Spirit of Jesus.
And the world keeps changing. If Jesus arrived today he would look different and speak different, and he would address different issues, because the world itself has changed. It’s true that people have not changed in their hearts or their heart-needs, but the way we approach those needs and the way we communicate the message needs to be different in different settings.
A recent survey on how the “Millennials” are approaching faith has just been published by the BARNA group HERE.
A review of “You Lost Me,” has been published by the Englewood Review HERE.
I summarized the findings and the three types of younger people who are leaving church in this chart.
