Missionaries from Mexico visit Saskatchewan

Rubén & Guadalupe with their daughter Heidy

It was Thursday night, November 11, when the van turned into our driveway in Hague, Saskatchewan.  Out came Darrell & Elaine Kehler with their four children, and Rubén & Guadalupe with their daughter.  We counted 9 people in an 8 passenger van … oh and then there was Muffy, the family dog.  What a sacrifice to drive the 10 hours in a full vehicle, but it was good to see everyone still smiling as they unfolded.

Guadalupe said it felt like they had driven right into winter, because for the first time in her life she experienced driving on ice, walking in snow, and beautifully decorated trees with hoarfrost.  Although she couldn’t imagine surviving if the temperature would drop any lower, she did enjoy watching the kids play in the snow in our back yard.

On Friday we introduced them to our church, Hague Gospel, took them to Saskatoon, and a visit to Mel & Cheryl Foth’s Dairy.  There were questions like “how do the cows and the little calves survive this kind of weather?”  Later that same evening they experienced their first real Hockey game, as they watched the Hague Royals.

On Saturday, we attended the breakfast at the Warman Gospel Church where Rubén & Guadalupe spoke.  Then after lunch we went to visit the Hepburn Gospel Church where Pastor Dean Huber greeted us and later took us across the street to tour Bethany College.

Sunday morning was back to the Hague Gospel Church where they both spoke during the Sunday school hour. Guadalupe reported in the children’s group and Rubén in the Adult class.  Rubén shared about his work in Mexico City, where he has helped plant 18 churches in the last 8 years.  During the morning sermon Rubén challenged us to be honorable Christians, to fellowship with God, to ask for God’s blessings and to bless others.  This was followed by a congregational Potluck lunch which gave time for some interaction with the people.  In the afternoon we made our way back to Saskatoon to again give them time to report in the Sunday school and preach in the Worship Service.  This time Rubén spoke about being a man/woman of our time.  We need to leave a legacy like our forefathers.  Today is our time, was Rubén’s passionate message to us.  As part of the afternoon Regional Event they had the Commissioning Prayer for Allen & myself as Regional Coach/Interim Pastor for the Hague Gospel church.  We were all invited to stay for the Youth Treasured Foundation Fundraising supper which followed the afternoon service.

We thank the Lord for the visit of Rubén & Guadalupe and their daughter Heidy.  Besides stirring the hearts with their passion to remain or reclaim our passion to reach others for Christ, he came to give thanks to the EMMC for bringing the Good News to Bolivia.  He said that he represents the fruit of our labors and now pleads with us to not lose the passion that instigated the urgency to send out missionaries so he could find hope and a purpose.

  1. Jacob Friesen says:

I had the joy of going with Darrell to the airport this morning. Both of our hearts were full as we reflected on how God had used the Mercado’s to encourage, inspire and challenge us personally and also our churches. We pray that the seeds from God’s Word planted in our hearts over the past weeks will also result in fruit.
Thank you Anita for the great report. God’s very best to you and Allen as you serve our Lord.
